Our Friends Scheme
We believe that our orchestra is unique in its ambitious and original approach to programming; mixing neglected and unfamiliar works with more well-known core repertoire. We are also committed to giving young soloists a platform to perform concertos early in their careers.
As a community orchestra, we believe in being inclusive and open to members regardless of their financial situation. Whilst our orchestra members do pay subscriptions, we always ensure that this does not prevent people from playing with us, particularly those who are students, unemployed or retired, who often benefit most from being part of an orchestra as an opportunity both to develop their musical skills but also for social interaction.
Inevitably, there are many hidden costs to achieving these aims and to maintaining the general good health of the orchestra. These costs include the hire of rehearsal and concert venues, the rental of orchestral sheet music (particularly if it’s still in copyright), fair payment for our professional conductor, leader and principal cellist – and for the professional extras who we often need to engage to fill personnel gaps on concert days, particularly when performing works for larger forces.
Our Friends Scheme offers an opportunity for our supporters to help us to continue with our goals of performing ambitious programmes and supporting music-lovers within our community. If you would like to support us, there are three levels of membership in the Friends Scheme. You can make an annual gift of £30, £60 or £90, with benefits that include discounted concert tickets. Alternatively if you are able to make a one-off or regular donation of any amount, it would be warmly received by the orchestra.

Testimonials from NLS Members
I joined the NLS in 2024 after a long break from music, and I’ve found the orchestra to be incredibly friendly and welcoming. It’s been a joy to revisit familiar pieces while also exploring fascinating new works, like those by Roussel and Frank Bridge, which I might never have encountered otherwise. This summer, I had the chance to perform a Cor Anglais solo in the concert, which led to me dusting off my trusty instrument that had been hidden away for 34 years! Joining the NLS has truly been a highlight of 2024, and I look forward to many more years of music, friendship, and fun.
Phil (Oboe / Cor Anglais)
I joined NLS after moving to London nearly 10 years ago and have loved being part of such a friendly and welcoming community orchestra. As well as enjoying the musical aspect, NLS has been important to me socially, allowing me to meet new friends in London, and mix with many different people, all with a common love of playing in the orchestra. The support of the Friends Scheme is crucial to us continuing with such challenging and ambitious music. Lisa (cellist)
